How do i partition a drive in windows XP?
Ok people - time to put your brains to work :P I am smart when it comes to computers, just not in this area. I already have windows XP SP2 installed on my hard-drive. I want to be able to dual boot, as i am involved in the Vista beta. I have looked into many different programs, and just do not have the money to spend on one of them. I also tried running the XP setup disk again (After restarting), and i couldn't do it from there. So, do i have to uninstall windows XP and then make 2 partitions? Or, is there a way that i can actually do it without having to re-install everything again - and possibly do it with the computer on? I Should add i run on the NTFS file drive. I've looked into a program by Acronis, and PartitionMagic from Norton. The other thing i was told to do was this: Start>Control Panel>Performance & Maintenence>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management Been there, tried to do what i could - can't do anything. It is a BASIC drive, NOT a DYNAMIC.

- I'm getting forgetful, but there are a number of ways to re-partition the drive. My usual trick is to locate a copy of disk druid, which was distributed with redhat linux at one point, and use that to create my partitions. Most people will point you at fdisk for generic repartitioning, however it has the side-effect of erasing information. What your options are will really be determined by what drive format you currently have in place. If you have a FAT32 partition, you have more options than if you're using the... umm... one starting with N that was developed for NT. Word from the wise... Make sure you defrag and check for immovable files in the section of the drive you want to repartition...
- I highly recommend obtaining a partition program for yourself. I myself is also a Vista beta tester, and I use norton's paritionmagic to perform my tasks in partitioning my harddrive, formatting it, and so on. From what I know, without using a program like partitionmagic, it is impossible to create partitions without formatting WinXP.
