How do I connect a Windows XP machine to a Windows 98 Machine?
I'm currently using an ethernet cable to connect the two computers together. I'm wondering what I have to run on each PC to make them recognize each other, be able to share files, and most importantly, have the 98 machine be able to connect to the internet. My setup is as follows: My main PC, the Windows XP one, connects to the internet via a router. I want the 98 PC to be able to connect to the XP machine and also get internet. Can anyone help me? My internet connection is Verizon DSL. I am 100% sure this will work because I've done it with friends, I just can't remember how.

- I think the problem is more in the cable. to have a network between two computers only, you can either have a cable running to a router and then another cable running from the router to the other computer, OR, you can have one cable running from one computer to the other. This cable however must be a crossover cable, not a straight through cable like pretty much all ethernet cords. basically, take the end off one side of the ethernet cord, and put it back on backwards. easier said than done tho, unless you have a new connector and a crimper. go to radio shack and ask for a cross over converter, or something like that.. I believe that should take care of the problem.
- if you have networked your pc with both connecting to the router than this is what you need to do. configure the main computer ip for the ethernet card as 10.0.0.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. configure the other computer with win 98 ethernet card to 10.0.0.2 with the same subnet mask 255.255.255.0 now the best thing for you to do is download Analogx proxy from analogx.com and configure your 98 explorer browser to 10.0.0.1 with a proxy port 6558. Alternatively configure your XP from make a new connection to allow access to your computer to surf the net.
- 1 st you did not say what type of internet connet oin you cause if you ahve dail up forget even doing it cause it wil not be worth it. now if you have dsl cable or any other type of high speed just get a router and and then you all do is set up each computer
- First since the Xp machine is already on the internet and you do have a router hooked up. Use the network wizard from Win XP. Run it and follow the boxes, make a disk for the windows 98 machine. This disk that Win XP makes will set up the Win 98 machine. The other approach is to open the internet settings in the control panel on the Win 98. Click on connection tab. go down to the list and make a few changes. First you want to share your connection on this computer (Win 98). You will need your 98 OS disk for this. The win 98 computer will ask for it, insert it and follow the boxes as they appear. In the ADD and Remove box click on the internet settings, which is under communications. Check the box next to internet sharing. Click apply, it will then read the disk for the files to copy to the hard drive. Once done (Win98) will re-start in order for the changes to take affect. The Win 98 computer should be able to log on to the internet and such. Just don't forget to run the internet connection wizard. It will appear as connect to the internet on you win98 desktop. Follow the boxes, then check the box where it asks you , saying automatically detect proxy setting. The file sharing is pretty easy too. On Win xp Choose what files to share with the compters in your network. Right click the file and click on sharing. For the win 98 it's the same, but you might have to tweak (play) with the setting for it to work. Win 98 in documents folder has an icon named my Network neighborhood. This will help you in find the XP machine. Also make sure that both machine are on the Workgroup name setting. Just follow the boxes as they appear also. Connect both machine to your router and see if the lights on both NIC cards light up. Once they
