How can I get Windows XP to show an icon on the Desktop for each mounted drive, as Linux does?

I am currently running a dual-boot Ubuntu/Windows XP system, and like the way that Ubuntu shows the mounted drives or loaded CDs on the desktop, updating them when drives or discs are removed. Is there any way to emulate this behaviour on Windows, either natively or using other (preferably free) software? Essentially, the only thing on my Windows XP Desktop is the My Computer icon anyway, so this would save me a step every time I wanted to browse files.

  1. click on my computer, right click on the drive and click "create shortcut"
  2. There may be another solution but you can always open "my computer" and make the width very narrow. That will cause the left pane to disappear. Make the window the full height and put it on the right side of the desktop. Not perfect but close to what you want. Any type of shortcut would not be dynamic.
