What kind of ports does a laptop need to connect a mouse and speakers?

I'm looking into buying a laptop and I'd like to connect a mouse to it, and speakers. What ports should I make sure the laptop has before buying it so I can use a mouse and hook up speakers to it? Thanks!

  1. "usb" ports :)
  2. A new laptop will have the ability for both of these. For speakers you need a sound card, which is integrated in most laptops For a mouse you need either a PS/2 or USB. Most are USB nowadays and the laptop should have those. It may even have PS/2 capabilities. You have nothing to worry about, so just buy what you want! Good luck!
  3. There are two ways to connect a mouse on today's machines. The standard way is a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port. Most laptops have these built in. The other way is a round (possibly purple) PS/2 port. The PS/2 Port is being phased out, since USB is hot-swappable (don't need to reboot to add or remove a mouse) and faster. Speakers - Normally a standard headphone jack will allow you to connect speakers. There are speakers that use USB, but they require a few extra pieces of software and can be more expensive.
  4. USB
