How can I unlock a computer that has windows 2000 professional?

I just bought a used computer at a yard sale. It works but it is asking for a windows sign in and password. Is there anyway of unlocking the password. I tried to reinstall windows, and the program will not start up when you turn on the computer. Please help, or I have a computer that is useless.

  1. You can try pressing F5 before the windows screen appears. This will bring you into safe mode. Use your up and down arrows and navigate to SafeMode without network. Hit enter. There is the possibility that you will be able to log into the administrator account if it was set up without a password. If the computer says that the password is incorrect for the 'administrator' account then you will need to physically remove the hard drive from the computer and format it on another PC. I am assuming that it will not boot to your 'Windows' CD because the computer is too old to have this function, but Win2K would not work on such an old model. So my question is now what 'Windows' CD are you using? Directly email me at QueryAll@Yahoo.com QueryAll on the Internet
  2. Probably was sold at a yard sale cause it was locked and they forgot the password, and they didnt know how to unlock it, safe mode might work, like was already said.
  3. First of all, when you say that it's asking for a Windows password, is it going thru the Windows start up THEN asking for a user name and password or is it asking for a password IMMEDIATELY after you turn the PC on? What do you mean that you tried to reinstall windows? Where did you get the disk that you installed from? Is it a legitimate copy of bootlegged copy? If it's bootlegged, try buying a legitimate copy of Windows, but it's hard to find Win2000 these days. An alternative is to get Linux (Ubuntu is a good first time choice) and install that. Linux is free and much better (more secure, less prone to crashes and virtually NO viruses).
  4. Try reading this.... http://redchaos.wordpress.com/2007/01/20/a-windows-account-password-is-pointless/ try using #2 A little help from the Internet it is the simlest and easiest way to get this done....it just takes a day or two for them to get back to you.

  7. yeah theres a program that give you the password so you can log in. Its called ophcrack and it comes in ISO Form So youl need an iso burner to burn a cd. Active Iso Burner is free and works great. Heres the link to Active Iso Burner http://www.download.com/Active-ISO-Burner/3000-2646_4-10612384.html And heres the link to OPHCRACK LIVE CD. http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=133599&use_mirror=internap&filename=ophcrack-livecd-1.2.1.iso&54340167 After you burn the program to a cd Boot up the computer with the CD inside. It will do a couple of things but dont be alarmed this is normal. Youl then have a window where youl see the program searching for user account passwords. It will take about 5 to 10 minutes to search for them. Once it finds them write them down. Exit the program remove the cd from the computer. and Reboot your pc and enter the password OPHCRACK froun for you.
  8. Seems like the others are sidestepping the problem. You are getting a login prompt but don't know the password... And can't boot off the disc. You'll have to go into the BIOS. Watch the screen right after you turn it on. It'll say something lik F2 SETUP or DEL SETUP or the like. It's usually F2 or the DELete key. Once you're in the BIOS, you'll need to change the boot options so CD-ROM is booting first, before HARD DISK. Once that's done, put in your windows CD and re-boot. It should boot off the CD just fine. You can then re-partition and re-format the computer and install normally.
  9. Sounds like the admin pass and user name- right? Not the OS install key. Quick way, password retrieval / reset software (20-$30, unless a freeware) Better way, restart with OS disc in drive hold down the F8 button. Choose boot option for cd, then choose full install (you can do it on a diff partition and save all the stuff on the comp. then pull what ever you want to the new install and format the other partition.
