How do I make my computer fast without spending money?

MY computer is very slow it consumes a lot of time opening any application. I have an Intel pentium 4 processor and 256 mb ram And a 40 GB hard drive. I have deleted mostly everything from my computer and no extra programs are installed. My computer also dont have any viruses. I have an internet connection. Please help me as it is taking my toll. All answer will be appreciated.

1. Run disk defragmenter to close fragmented gaps on your hard drive. Make sure you shut down at least once a day to clear cache memory. If you can spend some money the best way to speed up your computer is with a RAM upgrade.
2. Gosh! that's a tough one I have the same problem it's going to be difficult for free unless you know anyone who will give you RAM for free LOL
3. I would suggest getting more memory. 256 MB is a small amount for Windows XP, which I assume you are using. This will cost money, but not very much at all. Memory upgrades have gotten cheaper each year. I assume you have SDRAM which is really cheap. You can get another 256 MB for around $30, but I would suggest getting 1GB, for around $100.
4. You can do a couple of things. 1) go to the Start menu and select Run... Type in msconfig and hit return. Uncheck programs that you don't want to load at start up. Then save and close everything and reboot. This eliminate the programs that is loaded automatically at start up. 2) Download a program call Tune-Up Utilities (search with Google) and run it. It will scan and fix your computer. The trial version will work for 30 days but is full functional. However, you really need more RAM and hard drive space. I recommend to have at least 512 MB if you are running XP.
5. Download a reg cleaner to get rid of all the stuff stored on your computer (even though you think you might have deleted it, it's still there in a condensed form). Go to your control panel, then system, click on the advanced tab, performance settings then select 'adjust for best performance'.
6. here are a few things you can do to speed up your system 1. run an antispy software to clean all adware,spyware and trogans if any. 2. delete all temperary internet file to, do this go to start/all programs/accessories/system tools/disk cleanup 3. defrag your system,do this go to start/all programs/accessories/system tools/disk defragment 4. install a memory manager like freeram,get it at www.download,com
7. it seems that u are working on win xp if you really want it to make fast, then format the disk and work on win 98 coz your memory is low p4 will work really great on win 98 and if you intrested in spending some money, then i can advice you to first format yr machine get your ram upgraded to atleast 512 and then install win xp fresh hope this will work fine
