What happens to your computer when you are running out of hard drive space?

I have a macbook 60 gb. Currently I have less than a 1gb of free space and I'm worried about the computer acting funny. I'm planning on upgrading my hard drive, but it costs a lot so I have to wait, but till then I'm worried about what will happen to my computer. PS: I know I can delete stuff for extra memory, but everything on my computer at this moment is valuable.

  1. It will start to slow down and the seek times will get slightly longer. I think once a disk gets to about 80%+ of capacity you can get more write errors in the data. Don't get your RAM confused with your HD space. You have a 60GB HD and probably 1GB of RAM By deleting files you will get more HD space but that has NO effect on your RAM. You can get a cheap external Maxtor drive for $200 or so while you wait to get a newer Mac. Back your stuff up if you are worried about losing it or corruption which could happen. You can back it up to DVD via external DVD burner if you need to.
  2. back up all your files on an external drive or on CD. as your hard drive fills up, your computer will work slower
  3. Nothing, your computer won't do anything strange, it will just keep working. My hard drive on my Mac is extremly low at it works fine.
  4. Computers need overhead space to perform tasks you assign them to do. Run out of room, and you will w/out fail eventually crash and possibly corrupt the OSystem and data. EVEN on a Mac. Please don't confuse memory with space. It makes geeks crazy.
