Why is my computer screen going black after the start up screen?

I just upgraded my fiances computer with a new motherboard, RAM and CPU. We were previously having problems with his computer freezing so we did the upgrade. I installed everything and the computer turns on yet when I try to boot it off a CD the screen goes black after the screen that says "press any key to boot off disk" also the screen goes black after the start up screen. I would really appreciate some help. I don't know where to go from here.

1. Did you put a fresh installation of your OS? I've found when you change that much of your hardware and boot with a configuration for your old hardware you can run into issues.
2. because once you go black you never go back!
