How do I get my old laptop to retrieve old data from hard drive?

My old laptop will not boot properly after an upgrade. It freezes when it starts up. Is there any way to retrieve old data on the laptop hard drive? I think the upgrade was a Windows upgrade. My laptop is an old toshiba. The problem is I can't get into Windows, though I can get into CMOS.

1. Do a system restore and restore your computer to the date before the updrade...but you can only do that if it'll reboot
2. what kind of upgrade did you do? Can you undo the upgrade? NEVER use system restore, it is a terrible application that causes more problems then it solves. Give us some more info about what it is you changed before the computer crashed.
