How can I get my Win98 laptop to connect to my wireless network?

I have an older laptop running Windows 98, a Linksys wireless PC card and a D-Link wireless router. The card works with my laptop just fine, and even connects to the internet very easily, but only if the router is in its default unencrypted state. I recently set the router to use 64 bit WEP encryption with a HEX key. My XP desktop has no problem with this, but I can't figure out how to make my laptop connect to the encrypted network.

  1. Talk nice to them ha ha ha
  2. Your card must be Win98 compatible, and 64-bit WEP capable. Without the exact model of your Linksys card, I can't say for sure, but since it works when the router is set to unencrypted, that would indicate it IS Win98 compatible. So you just have to verify which encryptions it supports - go to the Linksys support site and check FAQ's for the model you are using. You may find it just doesn't support that level of security, or you may find out you just need to download a patch...
