How to boost up windows vista home premium?

I just bought a laptop, windows vista home premium yesterday and it seems that it wasn't working as fast as it should be. What actions and softwares should I do and use? Thanks!

  1. You need at least 2 Gig of RAM for VISTA to work at a decent speed. Most new computers only come with 512 or 1Gig. So first thing is boost your RAM.
  2. How much memory do you have? A quick way to add memory is plug in a Flash Drive into a USB port and choose "speed up my system" on the popup. Try to use at least 2 gig although anything will help.
  3. If you bought it new, then it shouldn't need much doing to it; how much RAM does it have? I find that Vista really needs 2GB to run optimally and have 3GB in mine. RAM is pretty cheap at the moment and usually dead easy to fit via a panel on the underneath of the laptop. Most computer places will supply and fit it for you while you wait too. Other things you could try is removing symantec internet security if it came pre-installed with it, and install a free anti virus program like Avast or AVG. Symantec anti virus and internet security (and McAfee to a lessor extent) do slow down a machine significantly. Also, remove any software from add/remove programs you don't think you will ever use. Finally, if you have a fast USB2 memory pen/stick, you could use this with Vista's built in readyboost feature which caches disk operations onto the USB memory device. It does need to be compatible, and Vista will tell you if it can be used with readyboost when you insert it, but it can really help compensate for a slower 4600/5400RPM hard drive. Hope that helps.
