How can I get Windows XP to show an icon on the Desktop for each mounted drive, as Linux does? I am currently running a dual-boot Ubuntu/Windows XP system, and like the way that Ubuntu shows the mounted drives or loaded CDs on the desktop, updating them when drives or discs are removed. Is there any way to emulate this behaviour on Windows, either natively or using other (preferably free) software? Essentially, the only thing on my Windows XP Desktop is the My Computer icon anyway, so this would save me a step every time I wanted to browse files.

When i try to access a folder that was in the other windows xp, it says 'access denied'. is there a way around this? is there a way to still save all my stuff? oh yah, when i try to log into the old broken windows xp, now it just trys to reinstall it! so now i have a working XP and one that wants to be installed... i know my stuff still exists somewhere on my hard drive because when i look at my C drive, there is still a whole lot of stuff taking up the space. what do you guys recomend? am i pretty much screwed?
What is the best way to restore a Windows XP backup on a different computer? Our computer was fried in an electrical storm. Fortunately I have a backup of our files and settings on an external hard drive (this was made using Windows XP Professional). All I really care about is restoring our files to a different computer. My choices are: using my husband's work computer, which also runs Windows XP Pro or use our soon-coming new computer which will have Windows Vista Home Premium. Is it possible to open the .bkp file in our external hard drive using my husband's computer and restoring just the files (I don't want to overwrite his work stuff)? Or will everything be restored? Is it possible to do this on our new computer with Vista, even though the backup was made using XP? Help! To clarify: When I made the backup, I used XP's backup utility and selected "Files and settings."
What happens if you install two different versions of Windows XP next to a Vista installation? I have Windows Vista preloaded on my computer, then I set up a dual boot between Vista and Windows XP Professional. Now I have Windows XP Gamer Edition and I want to install that too, but I read somewhere that it is "unadvised." If I install it then add it to my EasyBCD Vista Bootloader will something bad happen? If so then what, and what can I do to avoid it? Thanks in advance.
How do I remove Windows XP from my toshiba portege 2000 and restart with Linux? I need a little step by step. The Windows XP crashes upon start. I have made a Ubuntu boot disc. What steps do I need to take to erase the Windows and boot with ubuntu. It won't boot on its own. I even set the bios to start from the CD rom (iomega zip 650). OR is there any way to repair XP without paying Microsoft a ton of money. Personally, I just want to escape to DOS, delete windows altogether and boot from the CD if I can. But I can't get past the 'dead' Windows XP. Thank you.
How do I connect a Windows XP machine to a Windows 98 Machine? I'm currently using an ethernet cable to connect the two computers together. I'm wondering what I have to run on each PC to make them recognize each other, be able to share files, and most importantly, have the 98 machine be able to connect to the internet. My setup is as follows: My main PC, the Windows XP one, connects to the internet via a router. I want the 98 PC to be able to connect to the XP machine and also get internet. Can anyone help me? My internet connection is Verizon DSL. I am 100% sure this will work because I've done it with friends, I just can't remember how.
How do i restore Windows XP to original configuration? I have a laptop with Windows XP that I'd like to take back to its original, out-of-the-box configuratoin. How do I set up a network between a Windows XP desktop & a Windows Vista Basic notebook? I can access the internet through both computers but I can't access one computer from the other. They don't show up on the other computer. The desktop running XP is wired through a wireless router. The notebook running Vista Basic uses a wireless connection. The help I've read seems to apply only if both computers are using the same edition of Windows. I might be missing the obvious step here so could someone please point it out for me? BTW, the notebook picked up the router and set up a network for internet access immediately. The desktop had to be reset before it picked everything up. The router is a dlink. ISP is road runner with time warner if that makes a difference. Thanks a lot for any assistance.

How do I install Windows XP on a crashed laptop using the startup disc? Everytime I start up my laptop, it goes stright to a message with a bright blue background and white words. Do I need to install windows xp before i try to configure maxtor hard drive? I have been using the Maxtor manual, but nothing on my BIOS screen matches what the manual says to look for. When I exit BIOS it asks if I want to run from floppy or cd/ dvd? By then though, my keyboard won't work. I tried to run their set up disk Maxblast but no go. I then entered my windows xp disk and it started set up. But then it had to stop, because i didn't read the packaging and it was a windows upgrade and needs the full version of windows xp to setup. Now I can't find any stores with windows xp they all have vista. Did I ruin my new hard drive? Or if I get a full version will Windows finish installing and then I can configure. I am new at this but installing the hard drive was fairly simple, especially since i was replacing the old one. Thanks for your help.

Windows XP only allows me to use WEP. How can I force it to ask for WPA as an option? My computer died and I needed to do a complete re-install of the system. As a result I lost the drivers and more - including those dealing with the WLAN. How do i partition a drive in windows XP? Ok people - time to put your brains to work :P I am smart when it comes to computers, just not in this area. I already have windows XP SP2 installed on my hard-drive. I want to be able to dual boot, as i am involved in the Vista beta. I have looked into many different programs, and just do not have the money to spend on one of them. I also tried running the XP setup disk again (After restarting), and i couldn't do it from there. So, do i have to uninstall windows XP and then make 2 partitions? Or, is there a way that i can actually do it without having to re-install everything again - and possibly do it with the computer on? I Should add i run on the NTFS file drive. I've looked into a program by Acronis, and PartitionMagic from Norton. The other thing i was told to do was this: Start>Control Panel>Performance & Maintenence>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management Been there, tried to do what i could - can't do anything. It is a BASIC drive, NOT a DYNAMIC.

How do I make windows in Windows Vista in the taskbar like Windows XP? I just bought a new HP laptop and it has Windows Vista. When I have multiple windows of one program running they stack up on each other in the lower right portion of the taskbar. Is there a way to make it like XP was, where windows start in the left side of the taskbar and are separate, moving across the taskbar to the right?
How do I make sure that the task windows appear on my taskbar for Windows XP? I use Windows XP as my operating system. Now sometimes randomly when I start my computer the task windows(such as the internet explorer that is opened or my documents or windows explorer) won't show up in my taskbar. How can I speed up displaying files in a folder with Windows XP? When I had Windows 98 and opened a folder, the files in it displayed instantly. I noticed that they load much more slowly with Windows XP even when I disabled the Indexing command. Some folders I have contain thousands of files (average size of around 60 KB) and the more files in a folder, the longer it takes them to appear on the screen. Any more suggestions on how I can speed up the files displaying? Thanks.
Is it possible to install windows xp using a normal windows xp cd on an acer machine which uses acer discs? Basically we bought vista the other day and want to install it on the acer machine but ever since we bought this acer pc we've only been able to use acer recover discs 1 & 2 to install windows. It won't accept a normal windows xp cd. There must be a way round this. Help is appreciated. Want to do a fresh install. I hear that these acer machines were built to only boot from their own xp cd's (recovery cds 1 and 2) there must be a way round it though.
