What are the most profitable ways for a programmer to make money from open source code? As a programmer, I am impressed by the quantity and quality of open source software products. A couple of the best ones I've personally used are: jEdit and FreeMind. I support the open source concept, but am concerned that it negatively impacts programmers' income potential. Becoming an open source consultant would probably be the best way of making a living from writing open source code. How else can a programmer make a living from open source code? Some additional questions... Can one legally repackage and resell open source? Are there standard types of open source licenses?

How can companies use Copyright to protect software when the source code is never seen by anyone? I can understand a Copyright license for source code that is published (e.g. the GPL) because its easy to see exactly what's being protected against copying, not to mention it protects against against a very specific threat -- using the source code to compile your own unauthorized software. On the other hand, companies that don't open their source code should theoretically only be able to enforce copyright laws against someone who's accessed & stolen source code and used it to compile unauthorized software. I don't understand how it can be used to combat piracy when then source code was never involved in the act.

Change code in Open Source Software to commercialize? I don't really have a good understanding about legal matter of open source. I read many online documents but didn't really find specific answers for my own questions. The situation is that I am planning to open an online business which requires to use open source content management software and shopping cart software. However, there is something I want to change in the codes to maximize the potential. My questions are: 1. Am I allowed to change codes and run the website of my own? 2. If the codes are changed, I still need to make notify of the original license, right? However, does it need to be visible for the visitors? For example: "This website is supported by Jooma.." 3. If it is open source, and if someone ask my company to see and reuse my modified version of the codes, do I need to give it to them? Thanks and looking forward for good responses! My struggling is that why Amazon didn't release its open source codes because Amazon uses a lot of open source platforms. I wonder if I modify to add in my own libraries or modules, do I need to release these. Since the libraries/modules are my own codes and it has nothing to do with the original software but just work as the "add-ins"
