What's the most effective way to attract a critical mass for an open source, social software coding project? I'm in Austin, looking to start an open source project to build a Context Management System. Web 1.0 was the age of content, and hence the Content Management Systems (Vignette, et al). Web 2.0 is the age of context. Learning to manage context, and letting go of content, is a whole new ball of wax. The purpose of the project is to allow ad-hoc formation of peer groups for small and large scale projects. In a real sense, this is a boot-strapping project. If such a thing existed, I'd be using it right now to create this project -- but of course, this project would then be unnecessary, and I would be able to focus my attention on other issues of interest, like: adult developmental stages, emergence, cultural transformation, etc. People in Silicon Valley just advertise that they are having a coding party. People in Central Texas barely grok del.icio.us. How can we best close the gap?

Looking for a good CMS (Content Management System)? Any good suggestions. Most of the one's I've seen seem to have good tools for wiki, faq, forums, basic page design/templating - but I really need one that can help manage a large number of products in a wide variety of categories and subcategories. Is this beyond the scope of typical CMS's? (Ideally I'd like it to cost less than $7,000 or be open source/freeware - PHP/MySQL. I could handle it being .NET SQL Server compatible as well.)

Clearing Browser (IE7) Cache not working? Hi, I am using an open source content management system and I am having a problem that is unique to Internet Explorer (v7). Specifically, when I update the content of my site and save my changes, although the website accurately reflects my changes, when I go back to view the content item in the administrator portion of my site, the changes are not reflected. Only when I go to Tools -> Internet Options --> Browsing -> Delete Temporary Internet Files will the latest changes appear. The browser seems to be caching old values every time I make a change to the content of my site. My settings are such that the browser is configured to look for a new version of the site on each visit to the webpage. I have confirmed that this is not an issue with Firefox, just Internet Explorer. Any ideas? I have tried the "Delete All" option under browsing in IE7 and this works ONLY for the current session. When I make changes to my content again and save the changes, I reload the page and it is cached with the old value. So, I need a more viable solution than this.

Fish tank problems!!? INGNORE TITLE LISTEN HERE!!!!!!! i think we all know what my real question what does all this mean? 'I gasped. Nothing could be more thrilling than this. Figure of speech of coarse. I laughed. Nothing would be forever. I've been looking for my perfect content management system (CMS) for quite a while now. I've gone through about 6 or 7 and finally realized that a perfect solution doesn't exist. Instead, I recently stumbled upon Drupal, which is an open source CMS. It was recently given a CNet “Webware 100” award in the Publishing category. The way Drupal works really is a paradigm shift from all other CMS software that I've used. Once I grasped the concept, its been pretty easy to learn
Looking for the best forum solution? Our website is in active development, and in the end, the key component is going to be the forums. Given that, we're trying to find the best solution we can. First, it needs to be transparent. Not just in being able to copy the site’s theme, but in hooking into a content management system that maintains the rest of the site. Users shouldn’t feel like they’re leaving one part of the website and going to another (as seen in some CMS’s that allow a forum as an add-on). Second, it must be customizeable. We’re going to want to be able to do things with user accounts that normal forums don’t care about. Assign points to topics, give rewards, let users mod other user’s post (outside the normal admin system). Any popular programming language is fine (realizing that popular is a subjective term, use your best judgment). Third, it needs to scale. We can only dream of a day where usage requirements require subforums to be on separate servers. Even until then though, we’re going to have to ramp up as we go, moving servers, allocating more space, etc. Fourth and finally, it has to support rich content. Images, music, videos, font styles, unicode. It also needs rules in place so we can limit them. Is there an existing solution that already fits the bill? Do we need to contract our own? Is your proposal open source of closed? If you want to copy your answers to our devblog so we can come back and rate it here sooner, feel free. It's at http://flamewars.com/devblog/
Reorganizing Technical Support website? I've been tasked with the project of reorganizing my companies messy, out-of-date support website. We provide a content management system to travel agents, and the platform has changed over the years (go figure the help documentation would need to update along with it). I'm not a big fan of reinventing the wheel, so I have been looking at help sections of sites like Network Solutions and Dotster. The open source CMS help documents are pretty scattered and are only helpful if you have a search box. So I guess my question is, where do I start? I have a degree in Graphic Design, so my first impulse is to review some Informational Design or Instructional Design help. Maybe there is a "best way" to organize help documentation. Are there other (better) websites that have easy to navigate, well organized support sections? Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you,

Basic Content management system? For this college project that I'm doing I need to develop a repository which will allow the insertion of multi-format documents (pdf, word etc...) and then a simple interface which will allow searching on this database of documents based on keywords and the ability to download and open these documents. Just wondering where to start on this. Whats the best technology to use. Was thinking maybe php as it can be a web interface to this repository or perhaps java using lucene. Is their any good open source libraries etc.. that could help me. Any comments suggestions greatly appreciated, Regards, M
